Our Livestock

Our Sheep

Grass Management and Sustainability

At Tynefield Farm, our flock of sheep comprises a diverse mixture of breeds, including Texel, Blue Beltex, Suffolk Mule, Polled Dorset, Aberfield, Romney, Lleyns, and Hampshire Downs. Each of these breeds brings its unique characteristics and strengths to our farming ecosystem, contributing to the diversity and resilience of our operation.

These sheep play a crucial role as our dedicated grass management team. We strategically move them around different areas of the farm throughout the year to effectively control grass growth and maintain the health of our pastures. Beyond their role in managing grass, the sheep also serve as natural fertilisers, spreading valuable nutrients across the land as they graze. This sustainable approach not only ensures the well-being of our sheep but also enhances the overall health and fertility of our fields, aligning with our commitment to responsible and eco-friendly farming practices.

Ginger Ninjas

Distinctive Characteristics and Mischievous Adventures

Our pigs are currently Tamworths, a traditional English pig breed that has caught our attention with its distinctive characteristics. These Ginger Ninjas, as we affectionately call them, are renowned for their long snouts, curious nature, and penchant for escaping their enclosures, leading to adventurous escapades around Tynefield Farm. From the Titchfield Park roundabout to the railway line, Silver Lining's car park, and even our neighbours' gardens, their mischievous spirit keeps us on our toes. Beyond their playful antics, Tamworths play a vital role in our farm's ecosystem. Many of our land suffers from compaction due to historical horse grazing; these pigs use their snouts to aerate the soil, contributing to soil health and fertility. While they may be mischief-makers, the succulent and delicious pork they produce more than compensates for their antics.

Recognising the Tamworth breed's productivity limitations, we plan to crossbreed our Tamworths with Duroc, a commercial breed known for its superior productivity and high levels of intramuscular fat. In line with our commitment to sustainable practices, our pigs enjoy a soy-free diet from cereals grown 3 miles away in Titchfield, thanks to our neighbouring farmers. Additionally, we prioritize the well-being of our piglets, ensuring they spend a minimum of 6 weeks with their mother. This extended period of nurturing guarantees their strength and health when they are eventually weaned, contributing to the overall vitality of our pig herd.
